This was recorded out at Stef's farmhouse near Iola. We'd all had a fairly relaxed and relatively sober New Year's Eve, and decided instead to do something communal and creative to commemorate the beginning of a new year. Most of it was just a loose jam around the kitchen table.
Stef, Jimers and Gavin are all part of Sloppy Joe. Sarah is creditted as 'riddim sistah' on their album Touched in the Head. She and her sister Jenny were centrally involved in The Stellectrics, who evolved into Irene's Garden, bands who acted as a nexus for a particularly wonderful social/musical scene in central Wisconsin for many years.
"Nice Time" is the old Bob Marley song. Tracks 3 and 8 are by Michael Hurley. Everything else is presumably traditional, or just improvised. A particularly excellent extended version of Tom Waits' "Gun Street Girl" unfortunately occured whilst the MiniDisc recorder was switched off.
"Totally Amped" is just a fragment of Matthew experimenting with his saz via Jimers' new Roland MicroCube amp (a Christmas present from Stef).
A good part of Wisconsin was in a relatively ecstatic state this afternoon/evening, as Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers had just received a standing ovation after what may turn out to be his last ever game (the Packers finishing a patchy season with a definitive victory, much to everyone's relief).
